Show Description from website:
Identity art is a well-established genre that has produced much debate and written discourse. Much of the resulting work tends to rely on, thus ultimately perpetuate, common stereotypes. This show collects art not about one's self but about others. The typical formula has been reversed in order to illustrate other people, cultures, and identities. Artists will inhabit a space between what they know of their culture/ethnicity/political or moral beliefs and how they ore their ideas are interpreted by another typically more dominant culture. Artists of many cultural, racial, religious, and political backgrounds, using mediums just as varied, have all created works assuming the perspective of someone else. To express oneself is a natural impulse. In order to attempt to express another, these artists have purposefully put themselves in a position where morality and ethics are virtually impossible to uphold and where distortion and misrepresentation are inevitable.
