Gina Pierleoni started out our interview by telling me a little bit about her background. She was five years old when she became interested in art. She had an older cousin who was an artist when she was younger. He was focused on portraiture and he was very talented. Gina’s cousin was also into the arts of the Renaissance. Having an older cousin in her life who was an artist was exciting and sparked her interest in learning about art.
One of Gina’s favorite “take-aways” was an exhibit she saw several years ago by Tim Hawkinson. She said that in this exhibit no two pieces were alike. He had installations that included sound, sculptures, paintings, drawings, machines and more. One of the many pieces of art that Tim created is Totem. This sculpture is made out of personal and collected materials. In his sculpture you will recognize the forms of various plastic bottles and containers. Another piece of art that Tim created is Bat. To create this specific piece Hawkins used plastic bags. He stretched out the bags to make them smooth, then he heated them up to get them back to the size he needed them to be. The bags serve as the skin and the fur of the bat. The piece that gave Gina the most significant “take-away” was a sculpture called Bird. This piece was made out of fingernails and super glue. You could see all of the bone structure and the fragility of the form. Hawkins used his own fingernails to create this naturalistic illusion. It was mounted on the wall just below eye level so you had to bend down to see all of the details. This piece was behind a plexi – glass half dome. Gina still has a very clear vision of this artwork.
The artist stated that drawing is probably her favorite medium because of it’s rawness and immediacy. Drawing was her first love so she has a sentimental connection with that style of art. She also likes the individual marks and the way they retain their own integrity. She thinks that both making art and experiencing art that she deeply connects with catapults her to another place. Anyone can participate in the act of creation and witnessing art. Some cultures don’t even have a word for art or artist because it is understood that everyone is an artist. Gina has traveled to Florence, Venice and Rome to see artwork. Much of the work she saw was in the places they were designed to be seen. Gina hopes to travel to many more places in the future to see all of the beautiful and creative artwork that’s out there.
