Birds of a Feather

IMG_0555The newest trend in hair fashion is one that gives roosters something to crow about. Feathered hair extensions, made with rooster feathers and a simple bead weaved into the hair, has been all the rage as of late, popping up in the tresses of fashionistas, celebrities, and every day feather fans alike. A recent article in the Style section of the New York Times examines the feather movement, mentioning celebrities such as Miley Cirus, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Selena Gomez as perpetrators of the feathered flock. The feathered-out scene at this year’s Coachella music festival in Indio, California was also noticeable, as more often than not, the stylish, fashion-forward festival-goers were feather-adorned.

Whereas specialty hair salons in New York City and Los Angeles charge up to $75, according to the Times article, for feathering one’s mane, Baltimore’s very own Flaunt hair salon, located on the Avenue in Hamden, is weaving in feathers for a mere $10-15 depending on the size of the cluster.

Last weekend I went to Flaunt to see what all the fuss was about and to take part in the feather frenzy. At the salon, I was the given the choice of a number of different colors of feathers, as well as two different sizes and styles. Depending on how much one wants to cash out, the feather cluster can be as flamboyant as desired, though the hair stylists are nice enough to recommend placement and colors. I walked out of the salon a mere 20 minutes later with purple and orange rooster feathers peaking out from behind my ear, as well as a long-term relationship with the trend in the making. Nothing like a feather or two to spruce up your mane and to bring color, fun, and a unique twist to your style.
