Throwing a simultaneous website launch party, pop-up art show, music and dance performance may seem like an overwhelming proposition. In fact, Baltimore fashion label Natty Paint’s recent website launch party at Load of Fun proved that, while it can be done, it is definitely a lot to take in. The event was a one year anniversary and website launch party that included a temporary exhibition by the Pop-Up Project curated by Ximena Vengoechea, and musical performances by Lazerbitch, Hounds, and In Every Room (amoung others).
If their Party Hard cover wasn’t enough to win you over, then In Every Room’s set was made even better by an accompanying dance performance by the ever-fun-to-watch Effervescent Collective. Collective members Jenny Berkowitz, Rachel Boss, Claire Côté, Laura Grossman, Marilyn Mullen, and Lily Susskind’s performance managed to enhance the music without overshadowing it.
The energy of the event and the nature of this sort of art- amalgam party did somewhat overshadow the otherwise high quality and delicate aesthetics of the Pop Up Project’s installation. While works on paper by Baltimore favorites such as Karen Yasinsky and Cyle Metzger are always nice to see, Im not sure the artwork got quite the attention it deserved within the launch event setting. I hope that the Pop-Up Project continue to produce shows, perhaps next time they could have their own party.
