Author Frank R. Shivers, Jr. writes that Fells Point “is the only area [of the city] where the beginnings of Baltimore can be felt.” Centuries ago ships arrived at the docks with thousands of settlers and immigrants, especially during the years the abominable slave trade thrived. Ever since, Fells Point and consequently its main avenue—Broadway Street—has become a collage of different cultures. Every neighboring store differs from the previous one and the renowned street is characterized by its great variety of food and its historical value. Broadway Street represents the very cultural construct of Baltimore. Currently Broadway Streets and its many side streets and avenues is home to a growing number of Hispanic businesses—reflecting Baltimore’s recent influx of Hispanic residents immigrating from a variety of countries.
