Art for Social Change Exhibition / Towson Arts Collective

Social Change Exhibition PostcardArt for Social Change is an exhibition of cutting-edge art with a purpose at the Towson Arts Collective through June 3rd. There’s an art movement currently gaining steam: Art for Social Change. We heard about an exhibition at Towson Arts Collective, a three-year old arts-education and gallery space on York Road in Towson. The TAC in partnership with the Center for Transnational Women’s Issues is currently presenting the Social Change Exhibition: A Part of Baltimore Green Week. The opening is long over, but there’s still time to check this show out, if you aren’t afraid of crossing the county line.

Kate Mansperger, the energetic vice president of TAC directs the show. She sent out the call for works expressive of social change. On view is the response from local artists. The show focuses on themes related to social change such as environmentalism, ethnic and cultural diversity sustainability, and social justice, and beyond (Transparent Burka, anyone?).

This show was juried by Rebecca Hoffberger, the esteemed founder/director of the American Visionary Art Museum, and radio personality and Executive Producer of the Center of Emerging Media Mark Steiner. Hoffberger says, “The Towson Arts Collective Social Change show throws down a lovely gauntlet for what art can awaken in all of us.” Hoffberger’s sensibility for outsider art is well in evidence in this collection. Particularly in a pair of quilts by Rolande Glicenstein. They are a collage of political, religious, and folk art elements, almost a quilted version of a grainy newsreel montage.

There are works by several photographers, including Krystal Jean Boaren, whose photos are ” an inquiry into the genre of yard art by self taught artists in the American South.” Particularly charming is her photo ” Margaret Dennis.”

Also notable are the oil portraits of same sex couples by local portraitist, Katherine Meredith. Her portrait Alec and David is sensitive and intimate, while The Koff Gilmore Family is a vibrant celebration of family with three kids and two female parents.

Art for Social Change Exhibition runs the gamut from found materials to photography to fine art painting.

Though slightly inconveniently located, this show is worth a look. It runs through June 3, and is open Thursdays 11:00am-4pm and Saturdays 1-5 pm or by appt. 410.977.7506.
