Step into the conservatory’s palm house, a glass gem built at the turn of the 20th century, and you will suddenly feel as if you have been transported away from Baltimore to somewhere more welcoming and magical. The conservatory consists of the palm house and the orchid room (both built in 1888), along with more recent additions which house displays of flora from Mediterranean, tropical, and desert regions. The tropical room includes a pond, complete with a tiny waterfall, and the desert room houses succulents which crowd the ceiling. As I wandered through the different sections, I couldn’t help but ask myself why I hadn’t stumbled upon this place sooner. The mood is slow and luxurious- visitors pausing to admire or sketch the plant specimens, and the entire place is warm, sunny and full of that sweet plant-scent. I could easily see the conservatory becoming a favorite escape during gloomy Baltimore winters.
