Fellow Radar Redux-er Naomi Gassel and I attended Effervescent Collective’s March 26th production of Dirty Dancing at the Annex Theater. This was my first introduction to the story of Baby and Johnny- before last Friday night, I had never seen Dirty Dancing in any incarnation (feel free to gasp in horror). Despite the fact that we came in halfway through the show (we were given the wrong information by a collective member) and had to squeeze ourselves into a packed corner, we both found it to be very enjoyable. Local R&B and soul band The Motorettes played live music on one side of the stage while the story unfolded on the other. Even without having seen the original movie I found the production to be humorous and fun- helped by the choice of actors; Johnny was played by Savannah Reich, while Baby was played by a Jake Dibeler, a guy with a belly and a beard. The actors both took incredibly well to their gender bending roles, which added a nice extra dose of humor to the show. Following is a chat we had about our impressions of the show:
8:28 PM naomi: hey
8:29 PM sasha: hey
naomi: so. dirty dancing
what do we remember?
8:30 PM sasha: what struck me most was the gender bending-it was done well-in a less cliché, humorous way. also I thought the live band was great
8:31 PM naomi: yes. i agree. looked them up, they are called the Motorettes
have you seen the movie yet?
sasha: cool no I haven’t
naomi: my friend has a copy, I can ask her for it
8:32 PM sasha: I thought the gender bending was interesting because
while it’s common to see a guy playing a woman, you
don’t see women playing men as often
naomi: my favorite part may have been the Mariah Carey
soudtracked fan-vid
sasha: actually I can watch it online on netflix- maybe Ill do that
yes that was awesome. despite technical difficulties
naomi: yeah and I think they were really well cast. regardless
of gender
8:33 PM they made it really approachable
sasha: agreed, and I think it’s a good sign that I thought it was funny even though I didn’t have much of a frame of reference
8:34 PM naomi: you can imagine watching that as a youtube video with
your friends.
sasha: yeah definitely
8:35 PM naomi: the whole thing sort of felt like that. like sitting around with
your friends and someone remembers Dirty Dancing
sasha: Also I think the juxtaposition of older pop culture stuff with contemporary is really interesting and cool
naomi: the costumes!
8:36 PM they were somehow true to the film and also just looked like a bunch of hipsters dancing
sasha: yeah I loved the three girls in denim shorts they looked great
naomi: the “babyettes”
yeah I liked them a lot
8:37 PM sasha: water boiling! brb
naomi: they filled the void that happened when a man plays Baby.
8:38 PM sasha: yes it was a nice touch
8:39 PM also the set and the whole production felt luscious and rich- I feel like a lot of plays are pretty dry and monotone
naomi: half of her role involves white keds and denim shorts
the live music helped that too
sasha: yes I agree
8:40 PM naomi: they also had to do some interesting time-lapsing because it was a film-to-theatre production
it added to the comedic timing
8:41 PM sasha: I mentioned the show to some of my friends and they didnt seem interested (I think that plays in general have a bad
reputation with people our age) until I mentioned the gender bending and beyonce and then they seemed really excited
naomi: yeah I had a hard time selling it too until after I saw it
8:42 PM except with those who have loved the movie since childhood
sasha: It was nice because it was a well-produced show but it was
really fun and funny
8:43 PM It was a lot better and smoother than I thought it would be- stuff at diy-ish venues can be a little painful sometimes
naomi: it’s interesting that you think so because i thought half of the fun was waiting for my favorite lines to be delivered.
I agree.
sasha: yeah the only one I knew was ‘nobody puts baby in the corner’
8:44 PM naomi: haha
and they sort of brushed past it which was even funnier
sasha: it’s one of those things that’s referenced all the time but you only have a vague and usually inaccurate idea about because
you’ve never actually seen it
8:45 PM naomi: yeah and now you’ve seen a ridiculous/warped version of it
sasha: which Im sure I like better than the original
naomi: i hope the movie doesn’t disappoint
8:46 PM sasha: it will be interesting to watch-it’s just too bad we didn’t get to
see the whole show
naomi: I know, though I think we got the gist.
sasha: yeah
8:47 PM naomi: it might have been more helpful for you. we rolled in and I knew what scene it was.
possibly sad for me
sasha: Also I was amazed by how packed it was and a lot of the ppl were older than I expected- I expected a lot of mica kids
8:48 PM naomi: and everyone was laughing!
sasha: yeah and the ppl running the show seemed pretty serious- its
making me take the annex more seriously
8:49 PM and it was a cozy space
naomi: yeah and there was some serious dancing
that guys who played the father… with the chair.
sasha: the dancing was great
8:50 PM lol yeah
naomi: that sequence was incredible
they managed to keep it light-hearted even when they were busting serious moves
sasha: there wasn’t really a dull moment- the live band def. helped
with that
naomi: yup. and the babyettes
8:51 PM and general raucous crowd
plus the rest of the dancers all kept up really high energy even when not dancing
8:52 PM sasha: yeah also I love shows that end with dancing it keeps the
energy up
naomi: we probably should have stayed for the after-dancing
8:53 PM sasha: yeah I just felt so awkward because we got there so late
naomi: yeah I know me too
8:54 PM next time. ha
sasha: yeah
naomi: ok. I need to study for a test tomorrow. if we think of anything
else we can email
or just talk in class tomorrow.
naomi: are you saving this chat?
8:56 PM sasha: yeah it should save automatically
naomi: ok cool. see you tomorrow!
sasha: alrighty have a good night!
naomi: bye
8:57 PM sasha: bye!
