One performance piece at the Transmodern Festival caught my eye. Reminiscent of Dellilo’s men in mylar suits, Scott Pennington’s The Pink and Blue Dilemma consisted of three anonymous masked laborers who stood inside of a box, surrounded by pink Styrofoam packaging nuggets and working tirelessly –scraping, shaving, cutting– at the Styrofoam column placed in the center of the construction. Simultaneous construction and destruction was punctuated by the use of packaging materials; this is a temporary box, not going anywhere. The comic blue and bubble gum pink design mimicking the playfulness of a bubble-pit was juxtaposed by their use of masks and the intensity of purposed suggested by their actions. Perhaps the ash clouds in Europe have me concerned, but these guys are on to something.
