Last night marked Sarah Nelson and Hanna Owens’ third collaborative showcase of their art in many years. The two, both twenty-two and juniors at Towson University named their exhibition Impulse Purchase. Of the event they say it is purely a self-indulgent and shameless show. One to promote themselves and sell the work they have created over the past three years.
One of the most interesting and enjoyable things about the show was the diversity of the work. Owens explained that she and Nelson had several pieces that never fit into any other particular show, and since they never had enough other pieces that revolved around that same theme, these pieces were set aside. However the university opens up this rather small space in the Center for the Arts building, room 4033, to students who request it and prove to the board that they have a considerable amount of work to be shown. Though some of the pieces had similar characteristics, the overall diversity was most enjoyable. In Hannah’s words, it allowed not only her “art friends”, but also her “non-art friends” to appreciate more than one piece and style of work in the show (Something for everyone). It was refreshing to examine a more “miscellaneous” collection of art where each and every piece had its own meaning and theme entirely separate from the next.
I had a chance to speak with both artists on the inspiration behind many of the pieces. Owens had the opportunity to study abroad in Senegal, West Africa for six months, where she found herself inspired by the architecture of the buildings around her. She is a fan of earth tones, which she incorporated with soft brush strokes against canvas in some of her paintings. Also apparent in her work is how she combines drawing and painting together while exploring depth in merely one or two colors.
Nelson credited the inspiration behind nearly all of her paintings to people she has met, her friends, and the impact of her relationships in general. She saved a rock she collected from a recent trip to the Oregon coast that she painted into many of her pieces. This is apparent in some of her landform pieces, and a few skull-themed pieces that she took and ran with. Nelson also studied graphic design in Scotland for two semesters and credits this trip and the friends she made there as part of her inspiration as well. She plans to return in the near future.

Is this still up? I really love the work featured in the slideshow. It’s very cool to see Towson University students.
