What is Guerilla Gay Bar? Taking over – one straight bar at a time! The first Wednesday of October, hundreds of people awaited the Facebook message that would reveal the place and time of this month’s coup d’etat of one of Baltimore’s traditional, straight-laced bars. Once again it was time to make it to one of this city’s favorite Friday night bars, but this time with a rainbow twist. Guerrilla Gay Bar Baltimore (GGBB) invites the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community, and everyone else who wishes wishes to tag along, for a break in the routine. This October 2nd a promising turnout driven by a month’s worth of anticipation took over a tropical paradise called The Terrace, an outdoor bar located over Bourbon Street.
I stepped onto The Terrace floor, eager for a taste of the takeover. After receiving my GGBB logo sticker at the entrance (which I proudly placed on my dress)I quickly made my way to the bar, now geared up to observe and take part of the night’s auspicious beginnings.
Meeting people became effortless amidst the bar’s atmosphere of palm trees, twinkling lights and view of Baltimore below. New acquaintences felt comfortable enough to act like they had been friends for years. There was no fear; no guarded head to toe looks or stay away warnings accompnied by annoyed eye-rolling. There was a deeper bond setting the stage this time and a clear mission to greet, meet and mingle. Age, ethnicity and personal space took a back seat to good conversation, drinks and a general feeling of having nothing to hide.
Though the rainy weather wasn’t helpful on this particular night, it was only one more reason to unite different clusters of Guerilla Gay Bar enthusiasts around the one drink dispensing bar with a bamboo roof. It would take a lot more than rain to ruin the excitement, and it was obvious to me that one taste of GGBB just wasn’t enough.
If you are looking for a great time, join the facebook group (Guerilla Gay Bar Baltimore) and wait for the announcement with the time and place information on the first Wednesday of every month. Straight bar goers, I advise you to join in. Or, before you know it (if you are lucky enough), your everyday bar just might undergo the GGBB transformation.
