Monday nights might mark the start of another work week, but dinner at Hampden’s Golden West Café always dulls the pain. Our stress actually melts away as soon as we walk in – once the aromas combine with the eclectic kitschy yet homey decor that we expect of Hampden (that distinctive mixture of neon colors with knick knacks someone probably stole from their grandparents’ house) we’re confident that we’ll actually enjoy our night out. Just in case we’re still dreading the rest of the work week we can linger in the front entrance, which always has a pretty comprehensive selection of current fliers for upcoming local events that we can look forward to next weekend; highlights for this week include everything from Camm Slamm, Baltimore Improv Festival, a cd release party at the Windup Space, to Le Loup’s show at the Ottobar.
No matter how pleasant it is, the atmosphere in a restaurant means nothing without the food. Fortunately the food, as always, was great. Mondays mean discounted burgers, so it was the black bean burger for me – it had a delicious balance of southwestern flavors, with seasonings that packed just enough heat without crossing the line into the overtly spicy. My date opted for the breakfast quesadilla, and tore into it with so much enthusiasm that I can only assume it must have been good. Our enjoyment was doubled by uncharacteristically fast service – normally we know better than to go to Golden West if we want food in less than half an hour, but tonight our meals were in front of us less than fifteen minutes after we ordered. Not a bad start to the week after all.
