Mobtown Modern Gets Loopy
October 5, 2009 | Sam Thurman

Mob TownI stood at the bar because the Metro gallery was packed. I probably should have showed up early but this was worth standing up for. I didn’t think classical music would have this kind of draw but this was classical ground up remixed and turned on its head.

Not everything was stellar – Todd Reynolds‘ attempts at beatboxing were ill advised as were the self-help-video-ambient-ocean-scene visuals projected behind him – but the show packed more than enough surprise to make up for it.

Eric Spangler’s “Pre-Dawn Artscape Ghost Town” managed an impressive subtlety despite featuring both a toy megaphone and a theremin. Todd Reynolds‘ final piece, “Outerborough,” featured a symphony composed entirely of Reynolds’ digitally looped violin moving from delicate to violent and capped off with a bass drum that kicked like a hammer. It was awesome.

Mobtown Modern’s next event, “Low,” kicks off promptly at eight at the Metro gallery on October 7. Expect surprises. And show up early if you want to sit.
