Dirty Projectors @ The Ottobar

dirty-projectors_m0vdbqeksf4x_fullThe Ottobar is an incredible venue. With a full crowd, well-sized and still sort of cozy, concert-goers leaning over railings on the second floor and on ground level pushed to the edge of the stage, the venue’s layout makes almost any band sound and perform at the top of their game. Tuesday night hosted Brooklyn-based Dirty Projectors, a 6-person group that has been churning out their own brand of ‘experimental rock’ since 2002-2003.

Dirty Projectors represent a new wave of open-minded approach to music with wide-ranging influences, many of which are immediately identifiable. Two of the band members, Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian, stand off to the side singing in tight harmonization, a striking contrast to Dave Longstreth’s powerful vocals. The combination creates an interesting blend of soul-infused art-rock.

Within 10 minutes I was able to weave my way through the crowd to the front in order to get some flash-free photos. Dirty Projectors put on a great show, their sound so unique that I understood the buzz that has surrounded this band. They thrive in a small venue, I could tell. “We’re excited to start our tour here in Baltimore,” Longstreth told the eager crowd before getting underway. And after standing hundreds of people away from their performance at Bonnaroo this past summer, I too was excited to see them in a typically intimate Baltimore music setting.
