Radar Redux.com is expanding the traditional concept of journalism, to cover a wide array of Baltimore Arts and Culture. We are a partnership between the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Johns Hopkins University.
Their premier exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints entitled WISE GUISE is chock full of work that looks like it was generated by a gang of like-minded visual artists who have had a significant influence on each other through both friendship and proximity and now are convening to make a statement not only through their work but also per thier collective comradery. This is not case. Instead the exhibition is the result of curatorial savvy by Adelsberger/Ebstein who are using the latest in web technology to make the connectivity seen here possible.
It is this very issue that makes WISE GUISE both unique in a regional art context and prophetic in the broader cultural context. This is a type of art scene that has been organically approaching for a while. Many of these folks don’t know each other and have not met – or at least not in the traditional sense. They found each other via the Internet using social networking sites like Flicker and Facebook, or knew one another for a short while and have moved on geographically. Some of the artists live local yet know each other just a bit; some are regional, some from other states and some from other countries. They all know Seth or Alex but by how much and why is complicated. What may seem a gimmicky idea (Hey, lets connect via the web and all show together!) turns out not to be gimmicky at all but quite simply today’s reality. This is but one very interesting aspect of this most interesting exhibition.

The common esthetic here is decidedly of the neo-pop psychedelic comic genre Adelsberger mines in his own current painting. He wisely did not not include his own work in the show but evidenced his predlictions. Adelsberger and Ebstein have approached their role as co-curators professionally both in terms of work chosen and the roles they play. Both are known for community mindedness – another aspect of Baltimore that seems on the rise, particularly among their age group (late twenty somethingish??)
Current plans call for NUDASHANK to do an exhibition every other month. With the space being returned to Seth to pursue his own work in between. Their goal is to build up a gallery that is welcoming to young unknown artists from the region and mix them in with others from all over the globe while offering affordable work to the community at large; they are well on their way with this first exhibition.
See the gallerys excellent blogsite for extensive high quality photos of the work and the galleries opening nights audience as well as all the upcoming info.
